the rise of the technical VC

Silicon Valley’s first big bang of innovation occurred in 1957, when eight engineers left Shockley Transistor to form FairChild Semiconductor.  Back then, the idea of engineers being entrusted as founders of a business was heretical.  Forty-one firms were asked to invest, but “none of them were interested”, according to Arthur Rock.

Doing good data science

Data scientists, data engineers, AI and ML developers, and other data professionals need to live ethical values, not just talk about them. The hard thing about being an ethical data scientist isn’t understanding ethics. It’s the junction between ethical ideas and practice. It’s doing good data science.
There has been a lot of healthy discussion about data ethics lately.

Using Apache Spark and Neo4j for Big Data Graph Analytics

As engineers, when we think about how to solve big data problems, evaluating technologies becomes a choice between scalable and not scalable. Ideally we choose the technologies that can scale to a variety of business problems without hitting a ceiling down the road. Database technologies have evolved to be able to store big data, but are largely inflexible.

I’m looking for data engineers

I’m interrupting the regular programming for a quick announcement: we’re looking for data engineers at Better. You would be the first one to join and would work a lot directly with me.
Some fun things you could work on (these are all projects I’m working on right now):
Building a forecasting model using MCMC to predict volume the next few months.

Helping autonomous vehicles see around corners

To improve the safety of autonomous systems, MIT engineers have developed a system that can sense tiny changes in shadows on the ground to determine if there’s a moving object coming around the corner.
Autonomous cars could one day use the system to quickly avoid a potential collision with another car or pedestrian emerging from around a building’s corner or from in between parked cars.
