Why Google’s AI is Limited To Diagnosing Only 26 Skin Conditions…for Now

I recently had to work with the function
f(x; k) = arctan( k tan(x) )
The semicolon between x and k is meant to imply that we’re thinking of x as the argument and k as a parameter.

What’s new in PyMC3 3.1

We recently released PyMC3 3.1 after the first stable 3.0 release in January 2017. You can update either via pip install pymc3 or via conda install -c conda-forge pymc3.
A lot is happening in PyMC3-land. One thing I am particularily proud of is the developer community we have built. We now have around 10 active core contributors from the US, Germany, Russia, Japan and Switzerland.

Examining the arc of 100,000 stories: a tidy analysis

I recently came across a great natural language dataset from Mark Riedel: 112,000 plots of stories downloaded from English language Wikipedia. This includes books, movies, TV episodes, video games- anything that has a Plot section on a Wikipedia page.
This offers a great opportunity to analyze story structure quantitatively.

Thoughts on NIPS 2013

I recently attended NIPS 2013 at South Lake Tahoe, which was an absolutely fantastic conference (the limited dining choices and general casino debauchery notwithstanding). Highlights included listening to an awesome talk by Daphne Koller on online education (and Coursera in particular), and meeting Mark Zuckerberg and learning about the new Facebook AI research lab.
